Indian Republic Day - commemorates India's adoption of a republic constitution in 1950, after gaining independence from British rule in 1947.

Holi - is a religious spring festival celebrated by Hindus. Holi is also known as festival of Colours, and is celebrated by people throwing coloured powder and coloured water at each other.

Hanuman Jayanti - is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Hanuman, the Vanara god, widely venerated throughout India especially in North India.

Vaisakhi - is an ancient harvest festival celebrated across North Indian states, especially Punjab by all Punjabis regardless of religion. In Sikhism the Khalsa was founded on same day as the Vaisakhi festival, so Sikhs celebrate twice as much.

Raksha Bandan - a Hindu festival that celebrates brotherhood, traditionally during the festival sisters tie a rakhi, a bracelet made of interwoven threads, around their brothers' wrists to celebrate their relationship.

Ganesh Chaturthi - It is the day Shiva declared his son Ganesha as superior to all the gods. Ganesha is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel.

Gandhi Jayanti - is a National Holiday celebrated in India to mark the occasion of the birthday of Mohandas Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation." He was born on October 2, 1869.

Navratriis a Hindu festival of worship of Shakti and dance & festivities. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi are worshiped.

Dussehrais the festival of Victory of Good over Evil. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the Hindu autumn lunar month of Ashvin, the first nine days are celebrated as Navratri.

  • in spring the clocks go forward, losing an hour at 01:00 am GMT the UK moves to 02:00 am BST

  • in autumn the clocks go back, giving an extra hour at 02:00 am BST the UK moves to 01:00 am GMT
